What Motivates Us?

What truly motivates a person to complete creative and challenging work?

I just watched this video by Daniel Pink which explains that financial rewards do not influence cognitive behavior.

Now hold on, financial incentives WILL motivate us to complete simple or mechanical tasks, but when a task requires conceptual or creative thinking, money won’t influence the outcome.

It has actually been proven that financial rewards will result in poorer performance and often destroys creativity.

So, what truly motivates us?

Autonomy
To be in control of your own actions; the urge to direct our own lives.
Mastery
To learn or improve a new skill; the desire to get better at something that matters.
Purpose
To make a contribution; the drive to do something because it matters. To do what we do in the service of something larger than ourselves.

Not Money.

“There’s a mismatch with what science knows, and what business does.”

In his TED Talk, Pink adds, “in a Results Only Work Environment (ROWE), productivity goes up, worker engagement goes up, worker satisfaction goes up, turnover goes down.”
