I completed the Augusta Ironman 70.3 this past weekend, and I am now officially addicted to this sport! The race was down in Augusta, Georgia, and it was 1.2 miles of swimming, 56 miles of biking, and 13.1 miles of running.
This was my first Half Ironman, the longest race I’ve ever done, and I probably didn’t train as hard as I should have. I’ve never swam a mile or ran more than 7 miles at once before this race.
I definitely didn’t eat or drink enough during the race. I finished in 5 hours and 57 minutes, and during that time I only ate 2 protein bars and 2 GU’s. I think you’re supposed to eat a bar or GU for every hour of racing. I pretty much burned everything I had, and by the end of the race I truly had nothing left in me. I didn’t listen to my body and felt pretty sick after I finished. As soon as I finished I laid down on a table and drank 2 gatorades, 2 waterbottles, and ate 2 Gu’s. I didn’t get up for at least 45 minutes.
It was still so much fun. During the bike, I was thinking about which race I would do next! I plan on doing another Half Ironman, a marathon, and 2 sprint triathlons next season, and I hope to be ready for a full Ironman after that.
I’m now building a site called TriathleteTips.com as resource for triathletes. I’ll be sharing my tips, advice, and knowledge on the site, as well as learning from other more experienced triathletes. Contact me if you’re looking to start doing triathlons.
